Coimbatore – Fastest Growing City in India

Coimbatore City (Kovai) is one of the top 10 fastest growing cities of India. Coimbatore district has a population of about 42.72 Lakhs (Census in 2011). Coimbatore is the district capital. There are more than 25,000 small, medium, large scale industries and textile mills.

History of Coimbatore

Coimbatore city is situated on the banks of river Noyal, a tributary of river Cauvery. Existence of Coimbatore can be traced back to 2nd Century AD as a small tribal village capital called Kongunad. According to Manuscript “Chola Poorva Pattayam” found in the Madras (Chennai) Oriental Manuscript Library, a small village kovanputhur named after a leader of the group kovan existed here. Later it was changed as Coimbatore. Coimbatore is also known as Kovai in Tamil language.

Karikalan, a famous Chola king brought Kondunad under his control. Kongunad was ruled by many famous kings from Cheras, Pandyas, Pallavas, Hoysalas, Vijayanagara and Chalukyas. Later when British ruled kongunad along with rest of India. It was during this British period many famous textile mills came.

Location of Coimbatore

It is located at the foothills of western ghats blessed with a wonderful climate and water. Coimbatore is 750MSL and average rainfall of 200mm to 300mm, temperature ranging from moderate to medium. Coimbatore district is fed with water from Noyal, Siruvani, Bhavani and Amaravathi. Siruvani, world’s second purest water body is the main source of water in the city. Coimbatore district is surrounded by Nilgris District, Erode District in Tamil Nadu and Palghat District in Kerala.

People of Coimbatore

People of Coimbatore are cosmopolitan and talk Tamil, English, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi. People of Coimbatore are friendly and open. Kongu Tamil, a dialect of Tamil language is spoken here, but you can also find people speaking english. English is a second language in school education in Tamil Nadu.

Tirupur (50 KMs, 1 Hour), Ooty (80 KMs, 3 Hrs), Pollachi (45 KMs, 1 Hr), Erode (100 KMs, 2 Hrs), Salem (180 KMs, 4 Hrs), Bangalore (360 KMs, 7 Hrs), Buses ply to every major city and town in Tamil Nadu and other states from Coimbatore.

Coimbatore has three railway junctions (terminals) – Coimbatore Central, Coimbatore North and Podanur (15 KMs).
