Bharathiyar University
The Government of Tamilnadu established the Bharathiar University at Coimbatore in February 1982 under the provision of the Bharathiar University Act, 1981 (Act 1 of 1982), with jurisdiction over the districts of Coimbatore, Erode and the Nilgiris. The Postgraduate Centre of the University of Madras which was functioning in Coimbatore till 1982 formed the nucleus of Bharathiar University. The University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi recognised the University in 1985.

The University named after the "Great National Poet Subramania Bharathiar", is enshrined with the motto "Educate to Elevate". In the University, every effort is harnessed to realise the dream of making "Educational Institutions as Temples of Learning". It is the aim of the University to participate in the task of necessary Imparting Knowledge, Skills and Creative Attitudes and Values among the youth of this country to contribute more effectively towards establishing an Equitable, Social and Economic Order and Secular Ideal of our Nation.

The University is situated at the foothills of Maruthamalai a small hill that forms the part of Western Ghats, in a sprawling campus of one thousand acres, at a distance of 15 KM from the city of Coimbatore. As of now, the University has 85 affiliated institutions (73 Arts and Science Colleges, 2 Colleges of Education, 8 Management Institutions, 1 Air Force Administration College and 1 College of Physical Education). Also, there are 19 Research Institutes of the State and Central Governments, which are recognised by this University for research purposes. All these Institutions cater to the educational needs of about 1,50,000 Students and Research Scholars.

Amrita Viswa Vidya Peetham

In the year 2003 the Government of India has conferred Deemed University status to Amrita Institutions, consisting of the Amrita School of Engineering(ASE), the Amrita School of Business (ASB) at Coimbatore, Amrita School of Applied Arts and Sciences (ASAAS) at Kochi and the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) with its Medical College, Pharmacy College and Nursing School at Kochi. All together, these colleges will constitute Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham (Amrita University).

This is the youngest Deemed-to-be-University in the country, and the first time a college has achieved this status in less than ten years. The Engineering School was one of the youngest to have all its programmes accredited by the National Board of Accreditation as "Excellent". Consistently producing the best results among all colleges in its category, as well as having the best placement record, it is one of the most sought-after colleges in Tamil Nadu. The Business School was the youngest to be accredited by the NBA as "Very Good". It was also rated by a number of business surveys as among the best 30 management schools in the nation.

The AIMS College of Medicine, inaugurated recently, has teaching facilities on par with the best in the world. It is the very first educational institution in all of Kerala to achieve this status.

The Chief Operating Officer of the University is Brahmachari Abhayamrita Chaitanya and the the Vice Chancellor is Professor P. Venkat Rangan, an internationally recognized pioneer in multimedia systems from University of California-Berkeley.

Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science & Higher Education for Women Also Known as Avinashilingam University

Dr. T. S. Avinashilingam, a great educationist, a freedom fighter, an associate of Mahatma Gandhi, an ardent follower of Sri Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda’s teachings, the first education minister of Independent Madras Province founded this group of Institutions under the Avinashilingam Education Trust. First started in 1957 as a Avinashilingam Home Science College for Girls, later became anautonomous college and became a Deemed University under the name Avinashilingam Institute For Home Science And Higher Education For Women in 1988. It now has the Faculty of Home Science, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Management, Faculty of Community Education and Entrepreneur Development, Faculty of Education and Faculty of Engineering.

This Deemed University offers education at the Under Graduate, Post Graduate levels and provides opportunities for doing research leading to M.Phil. and Ph.D Degrees. Specialized education is given along with Indian culture and social moral and spiritual values.

Agricultural University

Tamilnadu Agricultural University is a leading agrotechnology provider of India and its graduates are recognized throughout the world. Though the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) came into being on June 1, 1971, it had its genesis from establishment of an Agricultural School at Saidapet, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India as early as 1868 which was later relocated at Coimbatore duing 1906.
