Ingredients
Coconut oil - 2 tablespoons
Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
Split husked Bengal gram (chana dal) - 1 teaspoon
Black gram (udad dal) - 1 teaspoon
Green chillies chopped - 4
Cashewnut bits - 1 tablespoon
Curry leaves - 1
Semolina (rava) - 1 cup
Sour yoghurt / curd - 4 cups
Coriander leaves chopped - 1 cup
Grated coconut if available - 2 cups
Soda bicarbonate - 1 teaspoon
Salt to taste
Preparing Method
1. Heat the coconut oil in a pan. Add the mustard seeds, grams and fry till the seeds splutter fully
2. Add the green chillies, cashewnut bits and curry leaves. Stir-fry till the grams are red in color
3. Add the semolina and stir-fry on medium / low level for about 3 minute(s) or till golden in color and aromatic. Allow it to cool. Once cooled, mix in the salt as per taste and the soda bicarbonate
4. To this mixture add yoghurt, coconut and coriander leaves. Keep aside for 15 minutes to ferment
5. Meanwhile, heat water in a steaming vessel
6. Pour the batter onto greased idli moulds and place it in the steaming vessel. Cover and steam on high level for about 10 minutes Repeat the procedure to make the next batch of idlis.
Garlic Chutney or Coconut Chutney can be served along with Rava Idli
Vegetables like carrots and beans can be added which will look colourful for children
