TNEB seeks additional power requirement details

COIMBATORE: The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) has asked the High Tension (HT) consumers to provide details of their minimum energy requirement during peak hours from March to May as the demand may increase during summer and there may be problems in getting the adequate supply.

According to an official of the board here, earlier, the TNEB had asked for the actual additional requirement of the units for the peak hour.

The required power was purchased by the board and supplied to the HT consumers.

In Coimbatore, 350 MW was the power needed by the HT consumers for the peak hours (6 p.m. to 10 p.m.). Most of the consumers who made use of the scheme here were in the textile sector.

The official said the demand for power would go up across the country during summer.

Shortage

Thus, anticipating a shortage in availability during the next two or three months, the board had sought the requirement details till May. Several units had already submitted the inputs.

The South India Spinners’ Association president G. Soundararajan said the board should give the consumers a specific period to regularly renew the requirements. It should also notify the consumers about the power available at least a week before the supply started.

Tariff for the peak hour supply should be uniform for all HT consumers, he said.

The Southern India Mills’ Association has appealed to Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to ensure that the entire quantity required by HT consumers for the peak hours was made available.
