Switch off lights at 8.30 p.m
Coimbatore: Forest College and Research Institute, Mettupalayam along with World Wide Fund (WWF) and FGCF (Futurize Global Community Foundation) will observe Earth Hour on March 27 from 8.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. by switching off all lights and electrical appliances.
Forest College has invited all the industries, institutions and households of Mettupalayam to join hands with it in this endeavour to conserve energy and mitigate global warming. For more details log on to www.earthhour.in and www.60earthhour.org.
Isha Foundation will switch off lights and non-essential electrical appliances from 8.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. on that day at Isha Yoga Centre in Coimbatore and ashram at Tennessee in the U.S. Isha, as part of its Project Green Hands, has planted 9.5 million saplings in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The project aims to create 10 per cent additional green cover in Tamil Nadu.
With the people's participation, it would plant 114 million more saplings. Earth hour was conceived by WWF and The Sydney Morning Herald in 2007, when 2.2 million residents of Sydney participated by turning off all non-essential lights.
Following Sydney's lead, many other cities around the world adopted the event in 2008.
With 579 cities, towns and municipalities and 77 countries and regions across every continent already signed up to this year's ‘lights out' event.
