Students showcase their scientific temper
COIMBATORE: K.P.R. Institute of Engineering and Technology and the Tamil Nadu Science Forum recently conducted Science Fest ’10, a two-day State-level science exhibition for school students, on February 5 and 6.
Minister for Rural Industries and Animal Husbandry Pongalur N. Palanisamy inaugurated the exhibition. Chairman of K.P.R. Educational Institutions K.P. Ramasamy was present.
Science models, quiz and an oratorical competition were the events held as part of the exhibition. Totally, 747 students displayed 200 models at the exhibition.Apart from showcasing their scientific temper, the programme was to generate awareness in the students on environment, the release said. Models on global warming, recycling of water, use of renewable energy, conservation of energy and pollution were on display. As many as 556 students took part in the quiz and 215 in the oratorical competition.
In his valedictory address, Union Public Service Commission Member and former Vice-Chancellor of Anna University E. Balaguruswamy told the students that science was the lifeline of life. He regretted that only Non-Resident Indians and none from India won the Nobel Prize. He called upon colleges to extend their laboratories to school students also.
Mr. Balaguruswamy handed over prizes to the winners of various competitions. The first prize winners were: Quiz: I. Mudassir Khan and U. Gopala Krishnan of Lisieux Matriculation Higher Secondary School; Model Tamil: A. Vigneshbabu, R. Prasana and S. Kathiravan of Kadri Mills Higher Secondary School and Model English: Akshya Balaji and Shravan Rajinikanth of Stanes Anglo-Indian Higher Secondary School.
The Young Scientist Award in the Tamil category went to PSGG Kanya Gurukulam Higher Secondary School. Stanes School won in the English section.
