Coimbatore: Tamil Nadu is the pioneer among the States in according top priority for infrastructure related projects such as roads and bridges, observed Finance Minister K. Anbazhagan on Tuesday.

He was speaking at a function organised to lay the foundation for two road overbridges at an outlay of Rs. 22.41 crore at Somanur and Muthugoundenpudur.

Minister for Highways and Ports M.P. Saminathan pointed out that in Coimbatore district, road overbridges would be constructed across 17 level crossings.

Ever since the DMK assumed power in the State, a total of 106 sanctions had been accorded for road overbridges whereas in the previous AIADMK regime only seven road overbridges were constructed.

Rural Industries and Animal Husbandry Minister Pongalur N Palanisamy said that all the 23 road over bridges in Coimbatore and Tirupur districts would be commissioned in 18 months.

Explaining the project details, Secretary to Government for Highways and Ports G. Santhanam said that the road over bridge on Sulur – Neelambur road sanctioned at a cost of Rs 11.6 crore would be connecting the national highways numbers 47 and 67. The bridge would ease vehicular traffic because at present the level crossing was closed 100 to 120 times a day.

The road overbridge sanctioned at a cost of Rs 11.25 crore on Kamanaickenpalayam – Annur road would connect the NH 47, 67 and 209.

District Collector P. Umanath and former Union Minister M. Kannappan also took part in the function.
