Coimbatore: Deepak Krishan, General Manager, Southern Railway on Monday inspected the Coimbatore Railway Junction and said that all ongoing works would be expedited and completed soon. Special trains would be operated from various places in the State for the ensuing World Classical Tamil Conference in June.

Mr. Krishan, who arrived from Palakkad via Pollachi, went around the station and inspected the premises along with the Divisional Railway Manager, Salem Division, P.N. Ram.

The General Manager inspected the platforms, passenger area and ticket counters. He held discussions with the authorities namely Station Manager L. Chinnarasu and Chief Commercial Inspector Mohan on the works being taken up and the requirements at Coimbatore.

He also directed the officials to complete the ongoing works on a war-footing and complete the improvements to the station building.

Steps would be taken to construct a subway in front of the station to enable the passengers reach the station as they were at present encountering problems in crossing the road owing to heavy vehicular population.

To a query on the need for supplying potable drinking water to the passengers and visitors, Mr. Krishan said that the water received from the local body was being supplied to the passengers.

However, there was an increased need for drinking water. The railway administration had already approached the corporation for providing additional 3 lakh litres of water and the same was being processed by the local body.

However, the Southern Railway was contemplating setting up a water treatment and purification plant using Reverse Osmosis technology. The purified water would be sold to the passengers at a subsidised rate.
