RTOs ordered to ensure all vehicles carry PUC certificate
In a move that could help curtail the increasing pollution in the city and enforce rules, Coimbatore collector M Karunagaran has ordered the regional transport officials to ensure that all vehicles carry the pollution under control certificate alongside their registration certificate, on Thursday.
As per the central motor vehicle rule, 1989, on completion of one year after the registration of a new vehicle, PUC certificate must be acquired and it should be renewed once in six months.
He said that not many non-transport vehicles were getting the certificates even though it is mandatory to renew the certificate once every six months. This could go a long way in cleaning up the environment, he added.
Tamil Nadu Vahana Pugai Ayvangalin Association welcomed the orders of the collector and urged the administration to step up the checking. R Ramakrishnan, president of the association said that most motorists failed to do the emission test at the checking centres. The administration should ensure that all vehicles have the PUC certificate. However, this would require creating awareness among public and regular checks conducted at emission centres. He said that in recent years many centres had closed down. In Chennai alone there were nearly 84 centres but it has reduced to 44 now. Similarly in other parts of the state it has come down to 110 from nearly 160 before. The reason is that not many vehicles are coming to these centres, said Devraj, who operates a testing centre in the city.
Thought the regional transport office is doing a good job, the support of the police could ensure more people come forward to check their vehicles.
