Road safety contests conducted
Coimbatore: More than 1,400 students from 58 colleges from across the State participated in 20 various road safety competitions conducted by the Coimbatore City Traffic Wardens.
A. Mahesh, Chief Traffic Warden, said that the contests were conducted for the second consecutive year. This year, the contests were held at the CIT College auditorium and the events were conducted by the Road Safety Patrol students from Nirmala College, PSGR Krishnammal College and CIT College.
In ‘Blood Bucket', a unique competition where students were sensitised to the intensity of deaths on the roads, the hands of the participants were painted red, which would be retained for a week. During all these days, they would be forced to talk on the subject they had learnt.
Other competitions included Tug of War, which highlighted the necessity of lane discipline and Rangoli on road signs where students were educated on various shapes of the signs defining ‘Mandatory Signs', ‘Cautionary Signs' and ‘Informatory Signs'. Painting, collage, 3D modelling, oratory, essay writing, quiz, song and dance competitions were also held.
S.G. Arasan Govan, Director, Govan Institute of Higher Education for drivers, gave a presentation on ‘Scientific insights on driving'. Suresh of Youth Task Force highlighted the responsibility of student community.
Twenty-five first prize winners would attend the free adventure camp at Coonoor. All of them would get a free VIP ticket worth Rs. 500 to ‘Musical Night' sponsored by Radio Mirchi and also certificates. All winners were awarded with certificates.
