Coimbatore: The Coimbatore City Police Traffic Wardens Organisation on Saturday conducted a mega event “Friendly five road safety contests for school students”. The first-ever road safety patrol in college in Tamil Nadu was inducted in Nirmala College for Women.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) N. Kamini inducted the first batch of 25 students to be Road Safety Patrol (RSP) volunteers to regulate traffic in and around the college area and to assist the police in traffic management. The strength of the RSP would be increased to 60 very soon and the number of RSPs in the city would be increased to 25 in the first phase and then extended to other colleges in a phased manner, Chief Traffic Warden A. Mahesh said. The RSP volunteers are being imparted training in traffic management, ensuring flow of traffic and in understanding and displaying better road safety hand signs while regulating traffic.

The contests were on important subjects such as lane discipline, signal jumping, understanding police sign and understanding road safety sign boards and right of way.

About 920 students from 42 institutions took part in the contest. There are a lot of vacancies in the Traffic Wardens Organisation. Service-minded individuals can contribute for making roads safer and to ensure a pleasant driving and riding experience for motorists. Individuals opting to be traffic wardens should not have any adverse record, criminal antecedents and political affiliation. It is a honorary post and no remuneration would be paid.

Similarly, colleges wanting to have RSP inducted could also approach the Traffic Wardens Organisation at 99940-74062.
