Republic Day celebrated with gaiety

Coimbatore: District Collector P. Umanath on Tuesday unfurled the tri-colour, distributed welfare assistance worth over Rs. 59.69 lakh to 200 beneficiaries and honoured freedom fighters marking the Republic Day celebrations on the VOC Park grounds.

Mr. Umanath reviewed a parade by the police personnel and took the salute.

City Police Commissioner P. Sivanandi, DIG of Police, Coimbatore Range, B. Bala Naga Devi, DIG of Prisons, P. Govindarajan, Deputy Commissioners of Police, P. Nagarajan (Law and Order), N. Kamini (Crime and Traffic), Superintendent of Police N. Kannan, Corporation Commissioner Anshul Mishra, Resident Medical Officer of Coimbatore Medical College Hospital P. Sivaprakasam, Area Commander of Home Guards T.K. Dhanashekaran and other officials took part in the celebrations.

The celebrations were conducted amid tight security. Visitors were frisked with metal detectors and police personnel maintained aerial surveillance.

The Collector also presented the Chief Minister’s police medals to over 50 personnel from Coimbatore City and Coimbatore Rural District.

The welfare assistance distributed included distress relief financial assistance from the Revenue Department to 62 persons, 23 sewing machines from the Adi-Dravidar Welfare Department and house site pattas for 31 persons.

Five students were rewarded for scoring the highest marks in board examinations.

Cultural events by 654 students from Coimbatore Loth Merchants Association Government Girls High School-Raja Street, SBOA Matriculation School, Presentation Convent, Nehru Vidyalaya Higher Secondary School, Government Girls Higher Secondary School-Ondipudur, Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School- R.S. Puram and CSI Girls Higher Secondary School for more than 40 minutes stole the show.

Later, the Collector took part in a grama sabha meeting at Mullupadi panchayat on Coimbatore - Pollachi Road where he gave away distress relief assistance to five persons.

The district administration celebrated the Republic Day with grandeur on Chikkanna Government Arts College grounds here.

Collector C. Samayamoorthy hoisted the national tri-colour and took salute at an impressive parade.

Seven policemen received medals from Mr. Samayamoorthy for their meritorious service.

The Collector also distributed welfare assistance worth Rs. 11.81 lakh, earmarked under schemes sponsored by departments of Revenue, Backward Classes, Rehabilitation, Adi Dravidar Welfare and Mahalir Thittam, to 65 beneficiaries.

Superintendent of Police A. Arun, Project Officer of District Rural Development Agency Renuka Devi, and senior officials from various departments were present.

The celebrations ended with colourful dance programmes by students showcasing the country’s vibrant cultural heritage.
