Project for hostel at urban studies institute takes off

Coimbatore: A two-storey hostel with 16 rooms and various other facilities will be constructed at Rs.1.50 crore at the Tamil Nadu Institute of Urban Studies on Alagesan Road in the city.

The project is being funded by the Coimbatore Corporation, Mayor R. Venkatachalam said on Monday after performing the bhoomi puja for it at the institute. Corporation Commissioner Anshul Mishra was present.

“The institute is conducting training and capacity-building programmes for elected representatives and officials of urban and rural local bodies. Accommodation for the participants will be provided in the hostel,” the Mayor said.

According to a press release, the first floor will have eight rooms, an air-conditioned suite, a kitchen, dining hall, lounge and portico. The first floor will consist of eight rooms and an air-conditioned suite. The hostel will have a 10,000 sq.ft. parking space, solar heating and even a rain water harvesting system.

The institute has been providing orientation on various programmes implemented by the local bodies.

Training

Capacity building training in implementing infrastructure development projects under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission was held for Mayor and other elected representatives and also officials and staff members at all levels in the Coimbatore Corporation.

Similarly, training is being given to officials and elected representatives of municipalities and town panchayats on implementing various water supply, drainage and infrastructure schemes.

Trained in batches, they will be housed in the institute hostel once the works are completed.
