COIMBATORE: Students pursuing courses in information technology need not panic as there are many opportunities in the field, Minister for Information Technology Poongothai Aladi Aruna said here recently.

They would also have ample opportunities to become job givers rather than job seekers and it was essential to develop entrepreneurial skills, she said, inaugurating an inter-collegiate technical festival, ‘Gateway ‘10,’ at the PSG College of Arts and Science. She said the TIDEL Park in Coimbatore would come up in June 2010. Commending the people of Coimbatore for its rapid growth, Ms. Poongothai lauded “their hardworking nature, innovation, zeal to do things uniquely, entrepreneurship and spirit of philanthropy.” “It is in the hands of the students to bring Coimbatore in the following order — Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Coimbatore and Kolkata. Being a perfect combination of both manufacturing and IT, Coimbatore is a role model,” she said.

“We need to be proud to be in Tamil Nadu for its best infrastructure, importance given to the two-language system and the fact that 30 per cent of the State people are contributing to the national IT industry. But, we still have three barriers — caste, religion and gender discrimination. We should initiate efforts to change this,” Ms. Poongothai said.

She urged students to maintain an eco-friendly environment, which would be passed on to posterity without degradation.
