Coimbatore: KG Hospitals, Coimbatore in association with the Coimbatore city police and Army, on Wednesday conducted a mock drill to rescue and render first aid to victims of road accidents.

Motorists were anxious when ambulances started trouping out of the hospital premises one after the other towards Valankulam bypass road. A mock accident scene was enacted there to assess how prepared were the various agencies in reacting to a disaster.

“Disaster management required preparedness and effectiveness needs to be tested, reviewed and fine-tuned at periodical intervals, hence the mock drill,” said Dr. G. Bhaktavatchalam, Chairman of the KG Hospitals. A call from the police control room was made to the KG Hospital at 10 a.m., stating that two buses full of passengers had collided near the Sungam bypass railway overbridge and 45 passengers were trapped inside the buses.

While the Army personnel started erecting make-shift shelters to accommodate the victims and provide them first aid, the police team, led by Coimbatore Deputy Commissioner of Police, (Crime and Traffic), N. Kamini, helped rescue the victims and divert traffic besides clearing onlookers. A team of doctors began giving first aid while the hospital remained prepared for key investigations concerning trauma care.

The medical team comprising doctors A. Sakthivel, Mohan Gandhi, and the staff co-ordinated in sending ambulances, paramedical staff and the medicines. The mock drill helped identify the strengths and weak areas that could be improved upon.
