Infrastructure works under way

Coimbatore: Infrastructure related works being undertaken here by State Government and Centre Government agencies are in various stages of implementation.

Most of these works have been planned in view of the World Classical Tamil Conference to be held in June this year.

A release from the Information and Public Relations Office on Friday said that financial allocation has been completed and tenders have been floated for the 72 road works being undertaken by the State Highways Department at an estimated outlay of Rs. 59.85 crore.

Rural Development Department has commenced works on three roads at a cost of Rs 1.41 crore.

Road works by town panchayats at Rs. 2.91 crore have also got the financial allocation.

The Corporation is working on parks, pavements, road junction related improvements at an outlay of Rs. 24.82 crore. It has already allocated Rs. 26.3 crore for road works.

Works to improve schools, corporation marriage halls and public convenience facilities are expected to begin soon. Tenders have been called for construction of bus shelters, pavements and streetlights with private participation.

Orders are awaited for creation of three link roads: Avanashi Road – 100 ft Road via NSR Road, Avanashi Road – Tiruchi Road and Masakkalipalayam Road.

Tamil Nadu Electricity Board has commenced laying underground cable along Avanashi Road and Tiruchi Road at Rs. 55 crore, whereas the widening and strengthening of the Tiruchi Road by National Highways Department is also underway.

There is also a plan to develop the Airport approach road at a cost of Rs. 4 crore.

Improvements to PWD Travellers’ Bungalow at Rs. 4 crore are also expected.

Orders are expected for carrying out improvements to Avanashi Road at Rs. 12 crore by National Highways Authority of India.

A proposal for strengthening and widening the existing Mettuppalayam Road is under consideration of the National Highways Authority of India.

The Southern Railway also plans to provide a facelift to Coimbatore Junction at Rs. 7 crore.
