COIMBATORE: The Department of Post has registered a five per cent growth in turnover in 2009-10 in this region.

Postmaster General of the Western Region, Tamil Nadu Circle, V. Rajarajan told The Hindu here recently that the revenue for this region was about Rs.125 crore. The revenue had grown by 10 per cent in premium products and savings bank products. “In premium and traditional products, we have surpassed the target,” he said.

The department had to vitalise the business set-up to increase the revenue. It organised regular interactions for those in the business post services. Coimbatore had done well in Speed Post and Logistic Post. For 2010-11, the focus would be on MO Videsh, Flat Rate Boxes, New Pension Scheme and Logistic Post.

Under the recently launched New Pension Scheme, for which India Post would be a Point of Presence, 110 people were covered so far. There was a huge potential for this product in the unorganised sector and also in the department, which has about 10,000 Grameen Dak Sevaks in the region.

Mr. Rajarajan said the region had 3,050 post offices and two were added this year. Of these, 2,400 were rural post offices. Forty-three post offices were covered under Project Arrow. Further, 366 post offices in the region were computerised, including 118 in 2009-10.

As the population increased and people moved to outer parts of the town, India Post was adding franchise for postal services. It had given licence to eight franchisees in Tirupur last month. These would function as a small outlet and would also be the agents for savings bank products. In rural life insurance policy, one lakh policies were added this year. It was 43,600 last year, he said.
