Coimbatore: The forest officials have begun an effort to bring a 10-year-old wild elephant found roaming along the reserve forest at Odanthurai with a swollen injured leg.

Following information, the forest officials from Mettupalayam tracked the elephant that had suffered an injury on its leg. Accompanied by its mother, the injured elephant was struggling to walk. On instructions from Conservator of Forests, Coimbatore Circle R. Kannan and District Forest Officer I. Anwardeen, Forest Veterinarian N.S. Manoharan was deputed to make the preliminary arrangements for treating the animal. Since the injured elephant is wild and also because it is accompanied by its mother, the officials have decided to rope in the services of tamed/trained kumki camp elephants of the forest department. On request, the camp elephants from the Anaimalai Tiger Reserve-Top Slip, Nanjan and Bharani have been brought to Mettupalayam area in trucks around 1.30 a.m. on Wednesday. Officials have planned to use the kumkis to bring the elephant and its mother under control first and then begin the treatment.
