Elephant menace in tribal hamlets

Coimbatore: A lone wild elephant that has been noticed roaming around the tribal hamlets and also in the fringe areas of the forest in Periyanaickenpalayam has caused uneasiness among the people after it destroyed three houses in a fit of rage.

Escape

It is learnt that Angammal (65) and her son Thirumurthy (26) had a providential escape after the elephant started damaging the clay walls of the house.

In addition to this, the elephant had also damaged two other houses in the last few days and had been roaming around in the area.

Following the incident, the Forest Department has deployed anti-depredation squad and anti-poaching watchers and tribal watchers in the area to monitor the movement of the pachyderm and chase it back into the jungles.

District Forest Officer, I. Anwardeen, Range Officer, N. Paneerselvam along with officials and elected representatives visited the three villages that witnessed the elephant menace in the last couple of days.

Compensation

The officials promised immediate measures to end the menace by putting the elephant back deep into the jungles and to arrange for early disbursement of compensation for the damaged houses.
