Consumers concerned over unscheduled power cuts

COIMBATORE: Electricity consumers here have expressed concern over the unscheduled power cuts they are facing for the last few days.

Coimbatore city and nearby rural areas are facing two hours of scheduled load shedding every day and 15 minutes to half-an-hour unscheduled power cuts at least two or three times a day.

Secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Cause K. Kathirmathiyon says the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board is aware that demand increases every year in the second or third week of February when summer sets in.

Energy consumption usually went up from February for three or four months. And, the situation is expected to worsen during the next three months.

The board should take preventive measures or at least inform the consumers the exact timings of load shedding. Consumers will be prepared for announced power cuts. Power disruptions in the night hours for domestic consumers affected students who are preparing for their examinations.

There should not be any power disruption during the evening and night hours, he said.

President of the Southern India Engineering Manufacturers’ Association Jayakumar Ramdass said that while domestic consumers faced unannounced power cuts in the evening hours, some of the industries faced unscheduled load shedding in the night too.

Domestic consumers, especially students, would be hit by unscheduled load shedding.
