CM writes to Centre on road improvements

Coimbatore: Minister for Highways M.P. Saminathan on Friday said that Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has written to the Centre seeking improvements to Mettupalayam Road.

Speaking at a meeting of the committee for co-ordination of transport for the ensuing World Classical Tamil Conference, he said the issue would be reiterated at the meeting of State Highways Ministers in New Delhi on February 5. The Minister told the meeting that the Highways Department was taking up the work of improving 17 roads at a cost of Rs. 60 crore, while the Coimbatore Corporation was taking up road works worth Rs. 26.03 crore. A sum of Rs. 10 crore has been set aside to establish link and scheme roads to decongest city. The authorities also discussed the arrangements for operating special buses from other places of the State.

The meeting was attended by C. Govindasamy, MLA, Transport Commissioner S. Machendranathan, Collector P. Umanath, Transport Secretary Atulya Mishra, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) N. Kamini, Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore, N. Kannan, Registrars, P. Thirumavalavan (Bharathiar University), A. Karthikeyan (Tamil University) and Special Officer for the conference S. Prabhakaran.
