Botanical garden aimed at creating lung space
Coimbatore: The botanical garden to be established at the jail ground to commemorate the World Classical Tamil Conference in June is aimed at creating lung space, said Kanimozhi, MP and Secretary of the Academic Committee, Ms. Kanimozhi visited the site on Monday. She was accompanied by the Collector, P. Umanath, Police Commissioner, P. Sivanandi, Deputy Inspector General of Prisons, Coimbatore Range, P. Govindarajan, Deputy Commissioner of Excise and Nodal Officer for the Conference, S. Prabhakaran.
Later, talking to reporters, Ms. Kanimozhi said that the existing vegetations would not disturbed and more greenery would be added. In the first phase, the unused vacant land belonging to the Prison Department measuring 93 acres would be taken up for setting up the garden.
After identifying a suitable site for relocating the prison premises, the remaining 72 acres would also be taken up.
The works would commence within the stipulated time and funds would not be a constraint, Ms. Kanimozhi added.
