Autorickshaws to go off roads on March 5
COIMBATORE: The Joint Committee of Coimbatore District All-Autorickshaw Workers’ Unions has announced that autorickshaws would not be operated from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on March 5 in protest against the increase in the price of petrol and diesel.
The decision to go on a 12-hour strike was taken at a meeting of the committee convened by its president P.K. Sukumaran.
Autorickshaw unions affiliated to the Centre of Indian Trade Unions, Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, All-India Trade Union Congress and the Desiya Murpokku Autorickshaw Sangham, Pattali Autorickshaw Sangham, Rajnikanth Autorickshaw Sangham and Azad Co-operative Autorickshaw Sangham would take part in the strike.
The committee also planned a picketing at the town bus stand at Gandhipuram in the morning as part of the strike, a press release here from Mr. Sukumaran said.
An increase in the price of petrol affects both the passengers and the autorickshaw drivers, Mr. Sukumaran said.
