Artistes too are concerned about scientific temper
COIMBATORE: Art is not created from a void. A complex social machinery is needed to set a writer or artiste in motion. Hence, writers and artistes are also concerned about scientific temper of the society they live in, M.T. Vasudevan Nair, writer and Jnanpith awardee, said here on Sunday.
Imagination
Delivering the graduation day address at CMS College of Science and Commerce, Mr. Nair said even students of science should be interested in creative arts as they were also engaged in exercises of creative imagination.
A scientific mind too requires a philosophic bent, he added.
Example
Citing an example from Malayalam literature, Mr. Nair said even in 1889 litterateurs felt strongly that scientific knowledge would not be the concern of only the elite, but that it would evolve into a mighty force.
Stories
Lauding the merit of early story tellers, Mr. Nair said the aim of those stories was not only to entertain, but also to educate.
He urged the graduates to be socially conscious in their respective professions.
You should protest when values are about to be buried and lost in the debris of a crumbling world, he said.
M.P. Gopalakrishnan, Chairman of CMS Educational and Charitable Trust, C.K.V. Nambiar, Secretary, and K.T. Varkey, Principal of the college, were present.
